DATE:  October - Online Month-long Workshop with Mary Buckham
WORKSHOP:  Power Up Those First Five Pages: or what it takes to break into fiction and why getting it right the first time is so important.
LOCATION:  At home in front of your computer

Registration has begun for yet another SinCNE perk: an October online class taught by Mary Buckham. Mary is winner of the 2007 Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence (Romantic Suspense Series) for Invisible Recruit and co-author of Break Into Fiction: 11 Steps to Building a Story That Sells. In this month-long, hands-on workshop, she will teach participants how the first five pages of their manuscript can make or break their novel.

To register, send an email to Nancy Gardner at membership@sincne.org. She will then send you information on how to pay Mary Buckham directly. The discounted cost of the class to members is $35, with SinCNE subsidizing the remainder.

Here’s what Mary says about her class: Power Up Those First Five Pages or what it takes to break into fiction and why getting it right the first time is so important.

Most writers understand the importance of a compelling and powerful opening, but not all grasp how to turn a ho-hum opening into a strong hook that engages a reader, including an editor and agent, into turning that first page. In this very interactive workshop you will not only learn the power of hooks but how to apply them to your first line, your first paragraph and other key areas of your manuscript.

Mary works one-on-one with all class participants to power up each participant’s opening! In this hands-on workshop we’ll explore:

  • What hooks are.
  • How to identify hooks in your writing.
  • Are you using hooks in all the right places?
  • Are you creating an empathetic character or not?
  • What’s the goal and is it clear?
  • Setting the stage to anchor the reader.
  • Creating story questions.

Requirementsents: Have on hand the first five (5) pages of your manuscript and be prepared to dig in and have fun. You may be surprised at what you’ll learn!
